Diamond gets top job at Barclays

Bob Diamond will take over as Barclays chief executive when John Varley steps down at the end of March next year. One of the City’s highest-paid bankers, Diamond has been running the investment banking arm, Barclays Capital, since 1997. He becomes president and deputy group CEO at the start of next month. Market overview: Footsie's winning run comes to an end

1630: Close A sluggish start on Wall Street ensured that Footsie finished in the red, giving up a recent winning streak.

Among the fallers was Barclays, which was in the news today announcing that Bob Diamond, head of its investment banking arm, Barclays Capital, will take over as chief executive when John Varley steps down at the end of March next year.

Miners such as Kazakhstan's ENRC fell back, giving up some of the recent gains that have come on the back of improved sentiment over the global economy.
